A combination of retirement from teaching English, relocation to Lewes, and an unleashed passion for painting found Helen Holder increasingly drawn to painting people and scenes, most often inspired by the sea, along with a deep connection with lines from poetry. Having previously exhibited at the New England Art Club, The Sussex Open and in selected group shows, this, her ninetieth year, finds Helen celebrating her first long deserved solo exhibition.

Officially launching the Hop Gallery 2012 programme, Mary Smythe returns with her latest collection. These paintings have evolved from a “lost-and-found” grid pattern on square canvas, which has guided her painting intuitively, using non representational shapes, lines and colours, which have subsequently suggested titles.

Louise Chavannes takes inspiration from walks in her nearby countryside, and also from memories of rural Northumberland where she grew up. In her latest collection, Louise features primarily woodlands and aims to evoke a sense of place using the emotional effect of pigment and textures. 2011 saw Louise winning the much coveted Cuthbert’s Royal Watercolour Society (RWS) Competition with her painting entitled ‘Woodland in Snow’, the winning painting was exhibited at the Bankside Gallery, London.
